This was the shortened lesson from what I learned in youth group this past Sunday. Soooo, that basically means that this post is just everything that I remembered from youth. I believe I got the biggest parts of the lesson. My youth leader did some really cool demonstration that I wish that I could've show you guys 27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. In the passage, we have Levi. He was a tax collector. In Israel, tax collectors were seen as these people who were bad. The Pharisees were basically asking Jesus why he associated with the tax collectors, who were seen as the bigger sinners. Jesus' response was in verse 31: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." He's basically saying here that He didn't come for the people who were righteous. The people who were good. He came for the sinners. He came to save the sinners. So, He sat with the tax collectors and the sinners because they were the ones that needed Him. The Pharisees in the passage were thinking highly of themselves. They thought that they were better because they were these religious leaders and they were doing all these good things, while the tax collectors weren't.
What the Pharisees thought, and what some of us think, is actually wrong. Sin is sin. Everyone is sinful in the presence of God. No one is better than anyone else just because they do good things. Everyone is sinful and everyone needs to repent. We can try and clean ourselves from our sins by doing good deeds, but we can never fully be clean. How can we fully be clean? Jesus. We can fully be clean by Jesus. We can't do anything on our own. We need the help of Jesus. This is why we needed Jesus to come down to save us. To come down and die on that cross. We would suffer from something that is rooted in human nature, but God loved us so much to give us a way to be saved. Through His one and only son. We need Jesus. We need Jesus to be clean from our sins.
