Culture is defined as “an established, coherent set of beliefs, attitudes, values, and practices shared by a large group of people”. Culture is said to be learned through a person’s environment (chpt. five, pg. 123). Anything that is surrounding you and can influence the things that you believe can influence your culture.
I like to say that part of my culture is somewhat of Korean culture. My grandmother is Korean and my mother picked up a bunch of practices that her own mother did and then she kind of passed those practices onto us. Family gatherings mainly have Koreans, so a mixture of Korean and American culture is thrown into our holidays, which I think is quite fun. I also believe that my religion is part of my culture. My religion influences a ton of what I believe and what I value. I choose to surround myself with Christian friends, so that in turn influences what I do. When looking at some other people who don’t have the same religion as me, I can see how much of my impacts what I believe in. It impacts on certain political stances I have, what issues in our world that I think is a necessary thing to think about. What I deem morally right or wrong. My family also impacts my culture. I am taught what is right and wrong from them, I am also taught what they think to be right and wrong. They tell me what their beliefs are, and parents' beliefs can really impact a person’s beliefs and values. I find that my values are quite similar to my parents.
